The railway transport service that serves London, Paris and Brussels is the famous Eurostar.
To travel with the Eurostar, trains run under the English Channel through the Channel tunnel (also called the "Chunnel").
The Channel Tunnel Rail link has three sections : the English, the French and the Belgian one)and operate at high speed (300Kph).
Eurostar trains speed you under the English Channel through the Channel tunnel (also called the "Chunnel"). Trains have been constructed by Alstom. They can run on third rail at a maximum high speed of 300kph thanks to the current they collect from the overhead catenary.
Eurostar trains are essentially modified TGVs. In July 2003, during safety test on the first section of the Channel Tunnel Rail link, a new UK rail speed record has been set by a Eurostar train : 334.7km/h.
Eurostar is runned by a joint venture between Belgian, French and British railway companies. People can buy refreshments on the trains using either euros or British pounds. The middle of the tunnel constitutes the border between France and the UK.
When you re-enter the UK, you may see on the train British Immigration and ND (i.e. Nationality Directorate) staff.
In England, the departure point of Eurostar is the famous Waterloo International station, located on the south bank of the River Thames.
You have the possibility to stop at Ashford in east Kent, or at Lille, in norther France, or finally at the terminus, in the Gare du Nord, in Paris.
A station in west Kent and another in east London are currently in construction : they should be operational once St Pancras station is adapted to receive Eurostar trains.
So, London will have three international train stations, namely, Waterloo, St Pancras and Stratford and therefore, journey tiles from Belgium and France will fall significantly.
Thanks to the provision of overhead catenary, other electric locomotives will be able to use the new tracks that may lead to longer distances, for freight or passenger use, that will become available.
Experience a very high speed of 300+ kph with the Eurostar !
